Re: Help me with Oracle course work
by johndageek (Hermit) on Sep 15, 2003 at 18:18 UTC
    Illa,

At first my reply was going to be biting, but after re-reading your post, help clear up a couple of points please.

    1) how long has this class been going on?
    2) is this high school, tech, or college course work.
    3) what classes were pre-requisite to this class.
    4) how long have you been attending the class, and did you take the pre-reqs?
    5) When was the work assigned, and what is the due date?

If this is one class, you have attended all classes, taken all pre-requisites (with a C grade or better) and done the homework, please post your instructors email, as I would be interested in the goal of this type of assignment.

Otherwise, if you have missed a bunch of classes, skipped pre-reqs, or any other self inflicted foolishness, the course is clear. Ask the Monks to guide you to some good reading, post specific, Perl language related questions - including your coded attempt to solve the problem.

Please understand that we are here primarily to further people's understanding of the Perl language, and promote it's growth through use. When a question comes up that includes statements like "I need to use Perl to . . . using :HTML, Oracle, and Perl and not using Javascript or VBscript - - - and I am confused by it all", we are at a bit of a loss.

Perhaps evaluating what is required to do the work, and your knowledge in each area would help.
    1) Oracle - can I accomplish all the required activities in SQL through a SQL user interface?
    2) HTML - can I create a page with a form on it that will present the input fields I need, and show some hard coded flavor of the data?
    3) Perl - Can I create a program to execute the SQL from step 1, at a command prompt and print results? (also logging in, committing and logging out)?
    4) Perl - can I create a program that runs on my web server as a CGI script that will output the page in step 2?
    5) Perl - can I combine steps 3 and 4 creating a self calling CGI script?

If you answer the above in order, your assignment will be done. It sounds like you have the basics for step 1 down pat. Now if you can complete step 2, you are then moving into the realm where the Perl Monks can be of assistance.

I hope I have not over stepped my bounds in stating my beliefs of what the Perl Monks generaly stand for. Many of us are willing to go off topic a bit to help a new programmer out, but doing someone else's homework is too far off topic, not to mention you need to earn the grade, not us.

    Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. The class is a 12 week Continuing and Professional studies intensive offered at a University. It is really supposed to prepare the student to take the first 3 of the Oracle DBI certification exams. Its gone through SQL and PL/SQL, Performance Tuning, and Architecture Administration. The course promised hands-on work along with lecture, but turned out to be all lecture. The project is really not representive of the classwork. We spent a total of maybe one hour on perl and HTML combined. Before that I was not exposed to these languages. I am more comfortable with SQL. There were no prerequisites for this. The class is over. I have an 'I' until I complete the project as I am sure everyone else in the class has. I have tried getting the Instructor to give me some of his time to help me understand what's needed but he is very unhelpful, ignores most of my emails, and refuses to give me a contact number. It seems they are more helpful getting you to pay for the course more than anything else. I have received some good links from other people on here that I will check out and see if they cant help me get a handle on this. Some of them seem easy enought to understand. Contrary to what some may believe I really want to do my own homework. Thanks again.
That being the case maybe it is time to go to the Head of Department, or the Dean. This sort of approach by the instructor isa totally unreasonable - unless he wants to specify some more pre-reqisites for the course.

Put it this way, when I was lecturing postgraduates if I had done this I would have expected a trip to the academic board - and would consider I had got off lightly with just a reprimand.

I appreciate your plea, that you want to do your own. I can offer no better assistance than the directions you have already been pointed in. Much of what is written will refer to other DB's, but that should be of little issue. I might also suggest "MySQL and Perl for the WEB" by Paul duBois. Paul has a very easy to read style and is full of good info. It should not be a great jump to Oracle after that.

        Good Luck

Sorry to be blunt...but you don't really expect us to do your homework for you, do you?

If you really have no idea where to start, I would humbly suggest you go to your instructor for guidance, or perhaps seek help from others in your class via something like a study group.

Otherwise, you can use Search and Super Search on this site to find examples of many of the features you describe, roll up you sleeves, and start writting some code....Then and only then, if you get stuck on a particular concept or point, you can show an example of what you are attempting and you will find many here who are willing to help.

But please, don't expect us to think for you.

Sounds like you would want to learn about these:
  • DBI
  • CGI
  • HTML::Template
