silverbird has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

When I do not authenticate I get:
Net::SMTP=GLOB(0x80fe114)<<< 550-(localhost.localdomain) [remover by s +ilverbird] is currently not permitted to relay Net::SMTP=GLOB(0x80fe114)<<< 550-through this server. Perhaps you have + not logged into the pop/imap server Net::SMTP=GLOB(0x80fe114)<<< 550-in the last 30 minutes or do not have + SMTP Authentication turned on in your Net::SMTP=GLOB(0x80fe114)<<< 550 email client.
When I try to authenticate I get a message like this:
Can't locate Authen/SASL.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/5.6.1/i686-linux /usr/lib/perl5/5.6.1 /usr/lib/perl +5/site_perl/5.6.1/i686-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1 /usr/lib/ +perl5/site_perl/5.6.0 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl .) at /usr/lib/perl5/s +ite_perl/5.6.1/Net/SMTP.pm line 102 (#1) (F) You said to do (or require, or use) a file that couldn't be found. Perl looks for the file in all the locations mentioned in @ +INC, unless the file name included the full path to the file. Perhaps +you need to set the PERL5LIB or PERL5OPT environment variable to say w +here the extra library is, or maybe the script needs to add the library + name to @INC. Or maybe you just misspelled the name of the file. See perlfunc/require and lib.
Whne I try to use help("AUTH") I just get a list of commands supported by the server (AUTH is one of them). Can anyone help me on either getting help on authenticating or teach me how to authenticate? Thanks

Looks like your mail server is using SASL for authentication. Users are not allowed to send email unless they have verified that they are an authorized user. The module Authen::SASL is needed for this functionality. The Net::SMTP pod describes the auth method.
