I am writing this as a new post because I am hoping that the other multiple "Perl Jobs" posts will get deleted. Besides, I am not going to respond to all of them. This was the original post. The original name and email has been XXX'ed as they are probably not going to get any nibbles from theis ad, and certainly not from my reposting it.

guideguide is a multinational software company achieving extraordinary things at the heart of the Internet. We’ve built the Internet’s first operating system. At the same time we work cleverly in partnership with major German household names to create business applications that allow small and medium-sized enterprises to publish content directly from their PC onto the Web. We’re backed by a significant investment and it’s a business which is moving at a rate of knots - our aim is to treble in size within 18 months. Our software development team is at the heart of this growth. We work in an environment which is relaxed, experimental and driven by technological innovation rather than client convention. We’re more open to new ideas than you’d imagine and the funding’s there to allow you to casually push back the frontiers of what’s possible. If you’re a committed perl hacker you’ll enjoy yourself. To join us you’ll be a skilled developer with around a year’s experience of developing software using perl on linux (or other Unix platforms). Experience in one or more of the languages we mention above would be really helpful although we’re happy to provide some training. To find out more about this extraordinary company, please contact XXX XXX (xxx@compro.co.uk) who’ll do his best to paint an accurate picture. You’ll find him at Compro Computer Services Ltd., St. Martins House, 31-35 Clarendon Road, Watford WD1

This is an open letter to whomever wrote this. First, noting the German and British references, I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that English is not your first language. So, no points of for grammar and spalling. Your first mistake was posting to Perl Monks without learning more about the community. Do you know how we feel about recruiters? Have you researched previous threads on the matter? Did you ask anyone how they would feel about it? Probably not. So that is your first sin. Secondly, you posted this message to multiple parts of the site - why? to increase exposure? Do you think that nobody would notice the multiple postings? One well-crafted plea for good perl people, while still unacceptable, would have been a lot less offensive than this spam. Which is what you have turned it into. Next thing: posting from an anonymous account. Why is this? Couldn't bother to get an account? Just passing through, and wanted to drop off some job offers on your way to dice.com? Perhaps you are a regular monk, hiding behind anonymity. Either way, a job offer coming from a respected, or at the very least, a registered monk would mean a lot more. The job offer itself is very vague. A web page might be nice. Does this company even have one? I understand that this might be a legitimate attempt at a perl/linux job, but this is not the place, or the way, to do it. Perhaps there will be a way to post jobs on the site someday.

Because you posted it multiple times, I am going to treat it like usenet spam. The Gentle Reader may wish to turn away at this point. :)

guideguide is a multinational software company achieving extraordinary things at the heart of the Internet.

As opposed to the "left fingertip" or even the "right anklebone" of the Internet? Is "guideguide" the name of the company? The repetition is catchycatchy, but do we need another guide?

We’ve built the Internet’s first operating system.

Um...ok. The Internet is an Inter-connected network, not a computer. I personally feel that TCP/IP might be here to stay, but who knows? Maybe you are on to something.

At the same time we work cleverly in partnership with major German household names

Like Hans, Dietr, and Helmut? They sound like clever people.

to create business applications that allow small and medium-sized enterprises to publish content directly from their PC onto the Web.

Publishing content from a PC to the web. Why didn't I think of that? What's next? Wait, I know! How about a means for people to dial in to the Internet from the computers!?

We’re backed by a significant investment and it’s a business which is moving at a rate of knots - our aim is to treble in size within 18 months.

A rate of knots? As in "we're knot going to make our deadline", "our client has knot paid us yet", and "our product is knot really that great"?

"Treble" is a musical term - I think the word you are looking for here is "double."

Our software development team is at the heart of this growth.

So this team is at the heart of a growth in the heart of the Internet?

We work in an environment which is relaxed, experimental and driven by technological innovation rather than client convention.

Yes, can you believe all those companies that are still making a profit by listening to their clients? That's so 1990's...

We’re more open to new ideas than you’d imagine

Try me. Wait, I've got a great idea: Up at noon, start to work at one, take and hour for lunch and then at two we're done.

and the funding’s there to allow you to casually push back the frontiers of what’s possible.

So it's only three people to a cubicle now...

If you’re a committed perl hacker you’ll enjoy yourself.

Actually I'm "Just Another" perl hacker. Some people say I should be commited, however.

To join us you’ll be a skilled developer with around a year’s experience of developing software using perl on linux (or other Unix platforms).

Around a year? Hrmm, too bad, I'm overqualified. Ohwell.

Experience in one or more of the languages we mention above would be really helpful although we’re happy to provide some training.

So is this a perl job or not? What other languages? The only language I see above is marketer-speak ("acheiving extraordinary things").

To find out more about this extraordinary company,

There's that word again! :)

please contact XXX XXX (xxx@compro.co.uk) who’ll do his best to paint an accurate picture.

Because you couldn't bother to do so here. We know nothing about the company, nothing about who you are, nothing about the position. Compro.co.uk is a headhunting service. Nice purple page with zero content (unless you have javascript and Flash). An irate chimp with a paintbrush in a dark room could paint a more accurate picture at this point.

You’ll find him at Compro Computer Services Ltd., St. Martins House, 31-35 Clarendon Road, Watford WD1

Great - next time I'm in England I'll look him up. Quite uncanny of you to realize that most of the people here are lying through their teeth - we really do all live in London. You can actually see the center of Watford from the perlmonks.org server room!

I apologize for the harsh tone, but wanted you to know why I voted it down. Repeatedly. There are plenty of other places for posting perl jobs, and this ain't one of them. This may change in the future, but I highly dount that posts like yours will ever be considered appropriate.

Three good things did come from your postings, however:

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

    Dear Perl Monks and Turnstep,

We are very sorry indeed that our recruitment agency failed to understand the nature of the Monastery. Some of the Perl hackers here at guideguide are fairly devoted Perl Monks and we were all acutely embarrassed by the incident. Rest assured that we have asked our agency not to do this kind of thing in future.

I voted this up, but I've one minor nit... "treble" is a real word, which dictionary.com says means (as a verb) "To make or become triple". That's the only definition as a verb. The primary definition as an adjective is "triple". As much as the post deserved it, it's best (IMHO) not to grammar-flame correct usage.

In short it seems that someone needed a significant clue. You did a good job of providing one. :-)
