Perhaps you were thinking of Mersenne primes. The equation is 2p - 1, where p is also a prime. This doesn't give you exactly what you want, but it will give you a larger prime.

    Note: p is required to be prime, but that is not a sufficient condition. At last check there were only 39 known p which generate Mersenne primes, and generally these p are not sequential.
