The best of it you haven't even mentioned: it bypasses the need of a make tool, which can removes a lot of cross-platform headaches. (It does, doesnt it? Quick inspection of the source leads me into thinking that.)

Even ExtUtils::MakeMaker is far from bugfree yet, so the fewer dependencies on it, the better.
