I am Marty Gipson.
Sailorsonoftailor is truth. I attended California Maritime Academy, division 1 deck. Graduated before they stopped the floggings, and gave as well as I got on two crossings of 0 latitude. I worked offshore oil in Mexico as Mate and translator, some tugboats, general cargo Seattle to Aleutians, frozen fish on the return. Once I got to witness a volcano called Mt. Shishaldin erupt, just us on the ship and nobody else around for at least 40 miles. I thought there would be a National Geographic on it when I got back, but no one else saw it. Just us.
Now I work with computers, testing, the only place where there are is as much constantly diverse work and people as there were at sea. I love Perl, for the way it helps in what I do, and for all the entertaining things one can do with it. I also love that it echoes of natural language.
Other interests:
- Books:
- I also love Perl because it causes me to buy lots of books ; )
- Any good book on any serious craft or art, like woodworking, boatbuilding, Mandarin (or Perl). There is something magic about executing any process that came to you via a bound collection of pages.
- Languages:
- Chinese (Mandarin), which I am learning in a serious but slow manner, for now, focusing on characters and some basic grammar.
- Spanish, which I speak, and
- French, which is pretty fluent.
- Power Tools:
- rebuilding a significant portion of my home after a fire, doing the finish work myself, and some little bits of real construction here and there. Mini backhoes and bobcats were almost as fun as Perl, but I would like to get this project done.
- carving/sculpting wood, mostly faces and figures, which I am pretty good at, but have almost no time for at present.
- small welding projects. It seems to be a well-kept secret that a wirefed welder is just a glue-gun for steel, but much, much better.
- Boats:
- As soon as I can I want to slap together a small boat and get my kids out on the water. Book
- Other stuff, which I will put down as I have time.
If I can contribute here, it will likely be in the area of Globalization and Internationalization. That's what I enjoy most about the work I do.
But, I am here to learn to write better Perl and use it in more creative ways.
