Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Does anyone know if it's possible to install this on the perlmonk.org server? Jcwren is never around, was anyone else given root or anything that wouldn't mind installing this for me? I'm sure there are a number of people who would find it useful if this was installed for us.

jcwren still answers email though. He's pretty good about installing modules if they are requested. That does not mean that he will install ImageMagick but it is worth asking.

I haven't been there in a while but you might also find him in #perlmonks on slashnet.

You probably should ask the owner first! I know I would be extremely unhappy if someone else has installed something on my box without my permission.

If that were the case (that you'd be unhappy if someone installed something on your box without your permission), then something is wrong with your trust of privileged users or your system setup. If anyone other than you can physically go in and install programs system-wide, then that's because you trust them enough to do so without your express permission. Or like I said, your box security is not setup as well as it should be. I'm just speaking in general, this doesn't overly apply to the OP.

NB: I'm not saying that it's alright to do whatever you want on a system because your sysadmin gives you additional privileges, but that if your sysadmin gives you the privileges to do something that you will use the extra resources appropriately and responsibly.
