I see no harm in telling the truth. That if they use $&, the program slows down. Back it up with benchmarks, if necessary.

I was hoping to get some insight into dealing with difficult people. In retrospect I think it's fair to present them with facts. If they choose to ignore the facts, the problem may be unsolvable.
