Are you really worried about the OP (who can't google for smbclient) writing an efficient messenger service spammer with perl? With the amount of work he went through for his original post, he would be lucky to make his loop break out of his local network. =)

Also I have very little sympathy for people that can't figure out how to turn off the service or block it with their router -- maybe the messenger spam will annoy them enough to get them to stop using their computer before they end up clicking on the next worm that hits their inbox. =)

Sorry I am so cynical today, between EMC and Lotus Notes I am very frustrated.

Close. I was worried that we had someone was going to write an INefficient messenger service spammer with perl. Specifically, one that was destined to be used in a cruel or stupid prank. Imagine a 12-year-old who just heard about a new way to send untraceable messages on the school network. Now imagine the content of the messages: "Korn Rulez! Britney Sux!" "Suzy Wilson's a slut!" "Bobby Cantwell's a dork!" "There's a bomb in the library. -Osama bin Ladin" Morover, I've never actually seen the Messenger service used for the purpose for which it was intended. -Logan "What do I want? I'm an American. We use it here to notify users when low priority HSM recalls happen from tape on old old files. They access it via samba shares and a window pops up saying that the file is being restored from tape, please wait 15 minutes and try accessing it again. =) -Waswas	[reply]

We use it exactly like we used to use wall on unix: to alert people of an impending reboot of something or other. ("Exchange server reboot in 5 minutes. Please log off!") jdporter The 6th Rule of Perl Club is -- There is no Rule #6.	[reply]

isn't it more efficient network wise to use it to say "The exchange server will be up for 5 minutes, quick read some email before it crashes again!" -- you know less network traffic, fewer popups... =) -Waswas	[reply]
