If you're not sure what its supposed to do that its not doing, how is anyone?

This looks wrong  if (open (DH,"<$trophy_cabinet>")) {

You probably meant if( open DH, '<', $trophy_cabinet ){

I didn't look past that glaring error , because I don't Xchat::
