Clarification: It should match the truncated piece of the last word, but the string being searched contains stuff before that. E.g. 
$text= "This sentence ends in foob";  # truncated from "...foobar"
$text =~ /foobar$/;
$text =~ /fooba$/;
$text =~ /foob$/;
... etc. ...
