You don't have to, http://wiki.wxwidgets.org/index.php?title=WxListCtrl#Using_Specific_Colours_for_Each_Item is at least 6 years old, and its not talking about the header colors, its talking about colours, period

If you're seeing different colors for the items, you already have this feature
