reads from STDIN. Try this script: 

while(<>) {
    print;
}

[download]

This should behave similar to yours under your 3 scenarios. 

$ ./weird.pl sample.txt

whereas 

$ ./weird.pl <sample.txt

or

$ cat sample.txt | ./weird.pl

[download]
