easist way (in my opinion) is to use Date::Calc 
use Date::Calc qw(Parse_Date Day_of_Week Day_of_Week_to_Text);

$day = Day_of_Week(Parse_Date("May 21,1981"));
print Day_of_Week_to_Text($day);
