First off you are not doing an apples to apples comparison in your conditional. Secondly you are trying to do pattern matching in a dubious fashion. Check out the following: 

$ cat torres09.pl

        if ( $line =~ m/^\d+$/){
                printf "%s\n",$line;
        }
}
