I've tried running perldoc in a terminal with the name of the script as an argument: perldoc hello.pl -- but that doesn't seem to work.

Your Pod::Perldoc/Pod::Text must be really old ...

But it does help if your pod is correct :) Tutorials: POD in 5 minutes
