If your date is guaranteed to always be in that format, you could just clobber the dashes with this: $date =~ s/-//g;
Otherwise, take a look at DateTime and the many DateTime::Format:: modules, Date::Parse+Date::Format, POSIX::strptime and strftime from POSIX, Date::Calc, ...
