I just tested it and the opposite thing actually works, i.e. 
for my $family ( sort keys %HoA ) 
{
    print "$family: ";
    for my $role ( keys %{ $HoH{$family} } ) 
    {
         print "$role=$HoH{$family}{$role} ";
    }

    #print "\n";

    print "@{ $HoA{$family} }\n";
}
