just as an addition. Compare the output of:
perl -MO=Terse -E'my $str = "McA"; $str = $str . " ";'
and
perl -MO=Terse -E'my $str = "McA"; $str .= " ";'
So the internal way of handling this (tried with Perl 5.10.1) is the same.
