What materials are you using for reference? There are some great free materials out there, and finding them early can greatly expedite the learning process. Familiarity with the Perl documentation is probably one of the most important skills to develop in Perl. More often than not, it's the search engine associated with my Firefox search box. Learning how to navigate CPAN and comfort with hashes and complex data structures are way up there as well. Some references you may consider perusing:
