You really need to pay attention to the underlying technology that each company has built their offering upon. It could be virtual machines, could be AWS, could be "virtual-machine style" containerization, could be "Docker style" application-orientation. You need to do "due diligence" to find out whether-or-not they suit your needs. For instance, start with finding out whether they offer "ssh logins to a Unix/Linux shell." Do they "host websites" using Apache, or nginix? Do they use "mod_this-or-that," or are they ready to handle "vanilla CGI?" Hosting companies have specialized in order to best support the particular market segment that they are aiming at. (And, quite frankly, "the market" is no longer on your side.)
