A decade or so ago, it might have made a measurable difference to have a Perl interpreter embedded in every Apache service process, so that they ... no doubt directly connected to the back-end SQL servers and so forth ... could "run just a little bit faster." But, times have actually changed. Web-sites have become "server-less," "cloud-based," and "multi-tier," with several layers of protection to create "defense in depth." Legacy mod_perl apps can now be very-easily transported to such environments without recoding. Therefore – is Apache unjustified in kicking this thing up into the "attic," or are they right?
