Something else to note "in passing" is that, while the Perl interface has not been updated "since 2006," the binary library is still in very-active development. The only purpose of the Perl interface is to communicate with that library's API, which has not changed in these many years. Unless and until that library implements something new that Perl needs to provide access to, which is very unlikely, it doesn't need to change.
