With shared hosting, the inner workings of the webserver are shielded from me and I am just left to deal with my own code. With a VPS or dedicated server, much more could go wrong!

I completely understand. There are still shared webhosts out there that have better support, though - e.g. my own site and PerlMonks are both hosted by Pair.
