If I run perldoc -oterm junk2
all I get is as below, with "ESC" in Inverse color (ie: not rendered graphically)
ESC[1mESC[1mBold headingESC[0mESC[0m
    *   ESC[4mItalic itemESC[0m

        Description of the first argument.

    *   ESC[4malso ItalicESC[0m

        Description of the second argument.

As I said, only perldoc -oman junk2 actually renders the Bold, italic etc.
