Some background can be found for
pmdevs on
Automatic redirection with https://perlmonks.org/?node=http://spammer.com
The relevant part is:
I was curious how many spammers actually succeeded to post porn links in the monastery, so I ran a site search on google
porn site:perlmonks.org
to my big surprise I got plenty of hits from spammers using an automatic redirection from PM to their sites
What's happening is that links of the form
https://perlmonks.org/?node=http://spammer.com
are automatically redirected.
and that's what the searchbox basically does, it puts any searchterm after the ?node= and then our scheme://queries (including http:// ) were translated.
That's why the gods decided to disable this feature, any link-format will now only be searched verbatim.
