For scripting languages, Event-driven programming has historically been far more popular for concurrent programming than (heavyweight) threads:

• Node.js for Javascript
• Twisted for Python
• EventMachine for Ruby

For Perl, the two most popular Event Loops appear to be:

• Perl Object Environment aka POE - originally developed by Rocco Caputo, POE is maintained nowadays by Chris Williams
• Mojo::IOLoop - minimalistic event loop by Sebastian Riedel (part of Mojolicious)
