Note from THE FUTURE: in the end (in 2015), this quite tricky problem was solved by the enigmatic kmx, in making PDL automatically generate both for itself and for modules that use it and its code-generating .pd files, a GENERATED subdirectory that both PAUSE and the CPAN websites could see.
