Friendica runs on PHP with MySQL as a database.
*sigh*
The real focus for the "why is perl dying" conversation should be "why is the shittiest language in the scripting scene still being used for new startup projects".
Because Perl programmers are not as confidently assertive and obnoxiously aggressive nor extremely well-funded as their theologically hostile competition.
It's a literal Holy War, and the Jihad against Perl, requires an actual Crusade. Rewrite the thing in Perl. Make it better and confidently assert your superiority. Dominate the battlefield. Fight to win. Take no prisoners. Leave no survivors. Defeat the enemy and never, ever, apologize. Ruthlessly celebrate victory, FOREVER!
