This looks at first glance like a genuine bug in the PDL distribution. I think you best bet would be to report it on the official Github bug tracker for the project.
It seems some of the contributors there are working on bugs regarding MacOS, for example there's a pull request for fixing rendering (i think) on that OS.
Since Apples are not the most common systems for Perl devs, you could set up remote access for one or two of the PDL devs if they are interested (use direct messages, not public posts to exchange sensitive information). This could help them test and debug their code without having to buy an expensive piece of equipment. (Essentially, you'd be donating your Mac to the project in exchange for better support for your rich students).
