Uh, no. The ref/def thing is unnecessary, since the hash deref syntax alone will tell the parser where to break: 
pdl> $row->{name} = 'sent'
pdl> p "\$.${\$row->{name}}ence"
$.sentence
pdl> p "\$.$row->{name}ence"
$.sentence
