I personally like Perl but it seems that Python and Ruby are gaining ground really fast and "compiting" with Perl.So what? Even if Python or Ruby "gain ground" according to whatever metric someone has invented, that does not say anything about the quality of Perl or of the other languages. I use Perl because it gets the job done: correctly, reasonably fast and efficient and it comes with a vibrant and friendly community. 'Nuff said!

A program should be light and agile, its subroutines connected like a string of pearls. The spirit and intent of the program should be retained throughout. There should be neither too little or too much, neither needless loops nor useless variables, neither lack of structure nor overwhelming rigidity." - The Tao of Programming, 4.1 - Geoffrey James
