The condition is being seen as $text  !=  ~ m/$firstname/ && $type eq "login", which with warnings enabled would have produced:

!=~ should be !~ at ...
Use of uninitialized value $_ in pattern match (m//) at ...
Argument $text isn't numeric in numeric ne (!=) at ...
