use nautical terms that are the same related to each other regardless of orientation/rotation

bow, the front of the boat

stern, the rear of the boat, opposite the bow

port(left) when facing from stern to bow

starboard(right) when facing from stern to bow

keel, the bottom of the boat

mast, the top of the boat ... not exactly right but close enough :)
