Your description brought to mind a numbered cube. I would name each variable numerically as a set of parallel planes (e.g. left/right = #1/#3, front/back = 2#/#4, top/bottom = #5/#6), like a die. Thus, roll the die, if var planes1_3 becomes oriented such that it now represents the front/back, I can visualize either var planes2_4 or var planes5_6 as the new left/right.
