BrowserUK suggested to use split and kcott provided a regex based solution - based on Apache's common log format.
You claimed that using split is a wrong approach.
And i tried to show that the task can be done only with split (N.B.: it works).
Briefly speaking: Better you provide a solution instead of posting some nitpicks.
Update: And note: Naming your audience "The Peanut Gallery" is IMHO an affront in this context.
