Perhaps it is sufficient to just add the  . metacharacter at the end of your pattern: 
$ perl -e ' print "matched" if "perlmonk" =~ /monk./;'

~
$ perl -e ' print "matched" if "perlmonks" =~ /monk./;'
matched
