1nickt: Agreed. But LWP is used all over the place and he's more likely to find it in his tutorials and books and classes. You'd be at a sore disadvantage if you didn't know some LWP in my opinion. But you may think me an old fart.
WWW::Mechanize is a subclass of LWP, a very very thin layer on top of LWP, that makes LWP a joy to use, pure LWP is too much bookkeeping -- for example, take a look around perlmonks for amount of noobs who forgot to make a cookie jar when trying to learn LWP -- Mechanize takes care of that chore
