You, Eily and mr_mischief are right of course, but maybe the somewhat extreme example (from this thread, in case anyone missed it) is side-tracking the discussion a little - the point of the OP is to (almost) always use \Q...\E (and of course that $a eq $b is better than $a=~/^\Q$b\E$/).
