Thanks guys, here's the revised statement, along with the result: if($line=~m/^\s*ACCESSION\s*NUMBER:\s*/m){$access_num=$1; $access_num =~ tr/-//d;} Result is the error message stating "Use of uninitialized value ...." ?? Thanks!!!
