Why are you trying to cram everything into a single line? 
my $count = 0;
for (@array) {
    #  I've had no difficulty counting substitutions on individual lin
+e replacements
    # my $individual_line_replacement_count = ...;
    $count += $individual_line_replacement_count;
}
