According to the “SEE ALSO” section of the documentation for XML::DOM:

XML::LibXML also provides a DOM Parser, and is significantly faster than XML::DOM, and is under active development.

In addition, Task::Kensho::XML recommends the XML::LibXML module. So that’s the one I’d choose.
