If the whole problem was to do with malware/ransomware then you should have mentioned this when posting, as alternative courses of action may have been better. I find the most common problem people have with getting adb setup (regardless of OS used) is drivers and selecting the appropriate options in the 'developer' section of the phone settings. Again, you didn't mention what part of the process you had problems with, meaning past experience/truisms are likely all people can offer in reply.
