a different was to assign the @var1 array without having it get disconnected?

Its an array :) so assign to individual elements not the whole thing (means use [])

#!/usr/bin/perl -- use strict; use warnings; use Data::Dump qw/ dd / ; my @f; my $ref = \@f; dd\@f; $f[0] = 12; dd\@f; @f[5,5,6,] = ( 5,5,6); dd\@f; $ref->[2] = 2; dd\@f; @{$ref}[1,3]=(1,3); dd\@f; __END__ [] [12] [12, undef, undef, undef, undef, 5, 6] [12, undef, 2, undef, undef, 5, 6] [12, 1, 2, 3, undef, 5, 6]
