I always thought the use of the s in perl was based on the sed/ed command name. I mean if it were based on xedit/kedit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XEDIT, or the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hessling_Editor it would have been c for change (from c/from/to/)
edit: well i guess since XEDIT replaced EDIT http://www.mildredbrennan.com/blog/?p=156 i should have said c was an edit command, but EDIT/EXEC are environments i dont like to remember!
