I'd suggest Mastering Algorithms with Perl (http://shop.oreilly.com/product/9781565923980.do) written by Jarkko Hietaniemi, John Macdonald and Jon Orwant, published by O'Reily. It was written in 1999, but it proves the point.

Modern Perl is newer and in it's fourth edition. It's also available for free to read.
