my $str = "a\x{201E}z";
#my $str = "a„z";

#my $str = "a\x{03C9}z";
#my $str = "aäz"; #works
print $str, "\n";
my $str_q = encode_qp($str);
print $str_q, "\n";
gives me this error message / faulty output:
a„z
Wide character in subroutine entry at ./x.pl line 18.
Only the fifth version of $str is working....
Can anyone tell me what is going here? (It is perl 5.24.1.)
