well let me try to enlighten you a little about my reasons. i read that post yesterday. if i had read that node 4 months ago, then i would have written my comments then. i don't care when the post is made, it's the time of reading that makes the difference. in case you didn't notice, that node out there is still there, and i still think it is curt and not constructive. i am so glad you cared enuff to check the last time the author logged on. i couldn't care less if that person hasn't logged on in years. {and i don't care if that exaggerated time does not fit in with the life span of this site so don't bother correcting me} that post is still out there to be found. i am tired of the self-righteous posters who belittle others in order to be cool, or seem smart, or whatever their motives are. there are a lot of closed minded people here who speak without caring how their post will be taken. it is that exact thing that upsets me.
if you are tired of people asking the same question, don't respond. if you think a person is too stupid for you to waste your time answering, don't respond. but if you are going to take the time to help someone don't start off with a smart-alec comment about how they left out use strict or -w or something else. for the most part people aren't pasting real code. they are snippets or examples of what they are doing.
when you ask for the opinion of the masses don't tear apart their answers because they don't agree with yours. that's the fun thing about an opinion, you are entitled to yours and i am allowed to have mine, and no one should feel bad about it.
when someone asks for some suggestions for starting a project, answer the question, don't dismiss it as a non-perl issue and go off on a tangent about the design of an example db structure and then tell them to go brush up on their skills. that's my current gripe.
now, my post may not help the problem of the rude people here, but if there is a chance that you think twice before slamming a newbie with a response that makes them leave and not contribute, that's great. but if the motives of this site are to keep out all those who are not as perfect as you, then i am just a big jerk. and that's ok too. i don't post anymore here because the first few weeks of my membership, i was made to feel like a loser and an idiot. so i don't participate now. i only responded to that message because i found it in a search i did.
so hopefully you are not utterly confused anymore. at the very least you now understand why i was a jerk. at the very best you will support the people who get belittled and not have them leave the site due to an unthinking clod who dropped a sarcastic response on a legitimate question.
