What is a "// string"?
We have tr///ansliteration operator,
m//atch operator,
s///ubstitution operator,
qr//egex operator,
q//uote and qq//uote operator,
and only the firstr// one is rare.
A special warnings is moot?
Cause I mean you found out
without a special warnings tr/// wasnt doing what you wanted --

You can have Tr('list','replacement,'options') anytime you want,
simply stop shifting responsibility for your ignorance on the designers of the language.

I've been in the same exact boat more than once,
wrote something,
couldn't figure out what mistake I was making , posted about it,
what you have to do is learn from it,
take responsibility for your own knowledge,
write a perlcritic policy (its easy) to remind you in case you forget.

• Its better not to do detection, but simply force numification if you're expecting a number, and let warnings issue a warning
• Re^15: why are hex values not numbers? (octal)
• Re^5: "Useless use of a constant" in grep block? Are you sure that you, even if you're already a veteran, will never make this mistake?
• How often would you make this error? How often would you not notice that @ary didn't get filtered? Average programmer? rarely * rarely * rarely = warning unimportant
• perlcritic is where this type of extra help belongs , warnings is all full up
• Re: determine the variable causing the error: Use of uninitialized value (don't pretend no warnings)
• if you asked a brain surgeon to limit himself to those procedures that could be performed by an intern, or the eye surgeon to only use stitches that could be removed/replicated by a staff nurse, then medicine would be in a pretty poor state.
• Every legal document has to be clear and obvious so that any newly qualified lawyer that just barely scraped through law school can immediately apply it to every possible situation to which it might be applicable.
• Every annotation of the Human Genome should be so clear and obvious that any kid with a Junior Chemistry kit can whip themselves up a little brother or sister once they've finished their homework.
• Why does reverse in list context operate on () instead of @_ or @ARGV ? if we only had a time machine

• perl is fundamentally what it is, and it works the way it has for over a decade, if you don't like it, don't use it; calling it line-noise and cryptic at every turn is uninspired and uninteresting
