Regarding decompressing, there is the core module IO::Uncompress::Bunzip2 that you should be able to use fairly transparently:

    or die "bunzip2 $filename: $IO::Uncompress::Bunzip2::Bunzip2Error"

# use $fh like a regular filehandle
